Anand loses again
Viswanathan Anand suffered a rare, second straight loss after Russia’s Alexander Grischuk defeated him in the second round of the Sinquefield Cup chess tournament in St. Louis on Monday.
The five-time World champion, playing with black on successive days, lost in 35 moves. This was Anand’s first defeat to the Russian in classical time control in 15 years! Veselin Topalov, the conqueror of top seed Magnus Carlsen in the opening round, nailed World No. 4 Hikaru Nakamura to emerge the leader. In the next round, Topalov plays with black pieces against Anand. Anand paid heavily for opting for some line of development for his pieces against Grischuk. Though Grischuk came under severe time pressure, the position made it easier for the Russian to find the accurate continuation. On the other hand, Anand tried to complicate matters in a bid to exploit Grischuk’s lack of time on the clock and the ploy failed. In an attempt to rush Grischuk, Anand committed some mistakes and was punished. The results (second round): Alexander Grischuk (Rus, 1) bt Viswanathan Anand (0), Veselin Topalov (Bul, 2) bt Hikaru Nakamura (US, 1); Fabiano Caruana (US, 0) lost to Magnus Carlsen (Nor, 1); Anish Giri (Ned, 1.5) drew with Wesley So (US, 0.5); Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (Fra, 1.5) drew with Levon Aronian (Arm, 1.5). Third round pairings: Anand-Topalov; So-Grischuk, Aronian-Giri, Carlsen-Vachier-Lagrave, Nakamura-Caruana |
