Indira Gandhi NSS Award 2013 Goes toMangalore University
Mangalore University has been selected for the
prestigious Indira Gandhi NSS Award for this year by the union ministry of youth affairs and sports. The President Pranab Mukherjee will confer this award to the Vice-chancellor, T C Shivashankara Murthy, of the university at an awards function that is going to be in the Darbar Hall of the Rashtrapathi Bhawan on 19 November 2013. The award comprises a memento and a citation along with a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh. Mangalore University is fourth in the row of universities winning Indira Gandhi NSS Award in Karnataka. Prior to this 33-year-old university, RGUHS, Bangalore University, and UAS Dharwad had received this award. The VC revealed that an ad hoc committee headed by the secretary of Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry had analyzed the university's track record for past 5 years in NSS activities to come up with this selection. He further dedicates the award to the 16,902 National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers in 160 NSS units functioning in 110 colleges under the university. The university is the only body in the state that has offered NSS a space in its academics curriculum for under-graduate students, he said. He further said that the fact that has influenced the selection committee's decision is that the NSS volunteers under the university have created assets worth Rs 1.30 crore over the last three years. In 2012-13, 18.70-lakh regular activities were carried out, 42.08-lakh special camp activities conducted, 4,775 units of blood were donated, 13,075 plants saplings were carried out, and 5,115 children immunized for polio; all these by the University’s NSS volunteers. |
