Madras High Court refuses interim relief for Chennai Super Kings
The Madras High Court on Thursday (August 27) refused interim relief to Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited (CSKCL), the new owners of the Chennai-based franchise in the Indian Premier League, which had challenged its suspension by the Supreme Court of India-appointed RM Lodha Committee.
A two-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice TS Sivagnanam adjourned the case toSeptember 23 after hearing all the parties. The bench asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India, India Cements and the Cricket Association of Bihar, the original petitioner in the 2013 IPL spot fixing case, to respond within two weeks. The development comes a day ahead of the BCCI's Working Committee meeting in Kolkata to discuss the future of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, the two franchises that have been slapped two-year suspensions. A Working Group formed by the board to study the implications of the Lodha committee report will present its final recommendations to the IPL governing council later on Thursday, based on which the working committee will take a decision. According to reports, however, the bench has said that any decision by the BCCI will be subject to the court's final order. In July, the Lodha Committee had suspended India Cements – then owners of Chennai Super Kings – and Jaipur IPL Cricket Private Limited – the owners of Rajasthan Royals – from the IPL for two years, while also suspending for life M Gurunath and Raj Kundra, because of their roles in the 2013 spot-fixing scandal. CSKCL challenged the suspension in a writ petition on August 20, claiming that the Lodha Committee order was against the fundamental principles of natural justice and fair hearing. |
