Micromax YU Yutopia launch delayed to December 17, here’s why
Micromax’s YU Televentures was supposed to launch its new flagship smartphone, the Yutopia, on December 7. Invites had been sent, but now it seems the launch is delayed till at least December 17. YU Televentures’ Rahul Sharma tweeted about the delay, “Hold your excitement, as we plan to announce something special with YUTOPIA. The most powerful phone now launches on 17th Dec.”
YU has been running teaser campaigns bout the YUTOPIA smartphone for sometime now, targeting the OnePlus 2 and even the Apple iPhones. The reason for the delay seems to be the recent Delhi High Court against Micromax and its subsidiary YU Televentures over non-payment of royalties to Ericsson. As we reported on December 3, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday restrained Micromax’s subsidiary YU Televentures from importing and selling mobile handsets and other devices that infringe Ericsson’s registered patents without paying royalty. The court also issued bailable warrants against three Micromax’s co-founders — Sumeet Kumar, Rahul Sharma and Vikas Jain — in a matter of contempt on its earlier order of November 2014 relating to payment of royalty to Swedish firm Ericsson on the sale of its handsets. Ericsson had alleged that Micromax was not paying the court ordered royalty as it was selling smartphones via a new company call YU Televentures. Last November, the Delhi High Court had directed Micromax to pay Ericsson 1 per cent of the selling price of its devices for using its patents on technologies that are essential to manufacture the products. Justice Najmi Waziri observed that YU Televentures was liable to pay Ericsson the same royalties as Micromax and posted the matter for further hearing on December 15, when the promoters need to be present. For Micromax, the court’s decision on December 15 will be of significant importance. Interestingly in the IDC numbers Micromax managed to maintain its second spot in the Indian smartphone market thanks to the popularity of its YU series. The YU brand has emerged as a popular lineup for Micromax with its pure Android experience and mid-range specs for budget pricing. What the court decides for YU Televentures will be closely watched.
