SoftBank, Dish Network eye T-Mobile
MUMBAI: Japan’s SoftBank Corp is in negotiations to acquire US wireless carrier T-Mobile as it seeks to make its second big acquisition in that country. The company is also engaged in discussing financial institutions to fund the deal which is estimated to be in the region of $20 billion.
SoftBank had recently acquired Sprint Corp for $21.6 billion. SoftBank will acquire T-Mobile through Sprint from its parent Deutsche Telekom AG in the financial year starting April. Pertinently, Sprint has been showing keen interest in joining hands with T-Mobile to create a stronger rival against Verizon and AT&T. A deal with T-Mobile will help the Tokyo-based company to become the world’s No.2 mobile carrier by revenue. SoftBank, however, may have to contend with Dish Network which is also looking at T-Mobile. Interestingly, Dish was also in the race to acquire Sprint before backing out. However, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has indicated that it will take a hard line in scrutinising consolidation bids. It had rejected AT&T’s application to acquire T-Mobile in 2011 due to competition concerns. Read more at: http://www.televisionpost.com/news/softb...-t-mobile/ | TelevisionPost.com |
