Spat grows between IndiaCast and Dish TV; DTH player sends legal notice
MUMBAI: The fight between IndiaCast UTV and Dish TV turns ugly. Just two days after IndiaCast agreed to provide signals of its channels to Dish TV on reference interconnect offer (RIO) terms sans any carriage, bitter exchanges have taken place between the direct-to-home (DTH) operator and the content aggregator.
It all began with IndiaCast UTV Media Distribution’s move to issue a public notice ad in the leading dailies today, alerting its subscribers that 21 channels as “continued subscription” might be disrupted from 1 January 2014. Finding the notice as being done with mala fide intentions, Dish TV has sent a legal notice to the content aggregator. [IMG]Guests cannot see images and links in the messages. We call upon IndiaCast to cease spreading false information regarding its channels on the Dish TV platform,” Dish TV CEO RC Venkateish told TelevisionPost.com. He added that Dish TV would take all necessary steps ‘including criminal and civil actions’ against IndiaCast UTV and its functionaries. When contacted, an IndiaCast spokesperson said that they haven’t received any notice yet and so cannot comment. noticeIn its public notice, IndiaCast has alerted its viewers on Dish TV that the availability of 21 of its channels is likely to be disrupted from 1 January due to Dish TV offering their movies on demand, instead of these specific channels. “It is likely that while you continue to pay the same monthly fees to Dish TV, some of your favourite channels may no longer be available to you on Dish TV,” the notice reads. Further, via its notice IndiaCast has asked its viewers to call Dish TV call centre. Alternatively, it has also given contact details of rival DTH players and multi-system operators (MSOs) including Tata Sky, Airtel Digital TV, Videocon D2H, Hathway, DEN Networks and InDigital, advising subscribers to get a new connection. The channels mentioned in the notice are Colors, CNBC TV18, MTV, CNN IBN, Bindass, Nick, IBN7, CNBC Awaaz, UTV Movies, History TV18, Sonic, Disney Channel, Hungama, Disney XD, UTV Action, Comedy Central, VH1, UTV World Movies, Nick Jr, Disney Junior and IBN Lokmat. Failing to reach a fixed-fee agreement, Dish TV and IndiaCast have done a RIO deal. Dish TV is promoting its latest offer of ‘on request channels’ which allows its subscribers the freedom to pick channels of their choice. As per the scheme, Dish TV is asking its subscribers to select channels from the IndiaCast UTV bouquet via SMS or phone. If a subscriber decides not to, they will not get the said channel and 100 bonus points per ‘unrequested’ channel will be added to the customer’s account, which can be used against the a la carte channels or MOD channels. The DTH service provider believes that the reach of the ‘unwanted’ channels will drop, which will help to save on the content cost. IndiaCast UTV, on the other hand, is hoping that consumers will put pressure on Dish TV. The row between the two is expected to grow till one of the player blinks.
