Eros says it is weighing options of launching a Hindi movie channel
MUMBAI: Pure-play film production house Eros International Media is weighing options of launching a Hindi movie channel.
The new channel could be housed under Eros International Plc, the holding company of Eros International Media. Eros, however, has not finalised its plans. Eros International group CEO and MD Jyoti Deshpande had told TelevisionPost.c om that the company was looking at launching a Hindi movie channel. “Our content deal for HBO Hits and HBO Defined is over and our content is being phased out of the channels. Going ahead, we plan to launch our own Hindi movie channel to exploit the syndication revenue model,” Deshpande said. When asked how Eros’ channel would be different and whether there was enough headroom in the Hindi movie space, she said: “Our strategy will be different. We will be more aggressive in shortening the window between a theatrical release and the TV premiere of a film. We will then syndicate the movies to other channels. Right now, other channels are earning by syndicating our titles.” The Hindi movie space is overburdened with a cutthroat competition between the top three players—Star Gold, Zee Cinema, and Sony Max. Among other major players are Movies OK (Star India), &Pictures (ZEEL), Max2 (MSM), UTV Movies, and UTV Action. Besides, there are B4U Movies, Filmy (Sahara), Zee Classic, Zee Action, Cinema TV, Enter10, etc. Further fragmenting the market are plenty of cable channels including Magic of Cinema and movie channels run by the multi-system operators (MSOs). Hindi general entertainment channels also air Hindi movies to spruce up their viewership. Meanwhile, clarifying on a report published in business daily Mint, Eros submitted to the BSE: “The comments made during media interactions are part of business plans of Eros International Group. These plans are not concrete and may or may not fructify in the future and/or could be executed by Eros International Plc, ultimate holding company of Eros International Media Ltd.” Eros had told Mint that it planned to acquire technology start-ups and in three years would aim to produce at least 125 movies a year instead of 60-70 currently. http://www.televisionpost.com/news/eros-...e-channel/ |
