Reliance Industries taps former IPL COO Sundar Raman to head its sports biz
MUMBAI: After ending his innings as Indian Premier League (IPL) COO, Sundar Raman has padded up for a second innings in the sports business. This time, the former IPL honcho has been tasked with spearheading Reliance Industries’ sports business as CEO.
RIL’s sports business comprises diverse interests including IPL franchise Mumbai Indians and the IMG Reliance joint venture (JV), which has long-term rights for football and basketball in India. IMG Reliance also owns properties like Lakme Fashion Week and Chennai Open tennis tournament. It also has a 65:35 JV with Star India for football league Indian Super League (ISL). With the IPL media rights coming up for renewal, the petrochemical giant, which is in the process of rolling out 4G services, might bid for the lucrative league. It also owns Network18 Group, which has interests in TV, print and the internet. “Sundar brings with him rich and unique experience of over two decades in understanding consumer insights and as a pioneer in the growth of sporting properties in India,” the company said. “Reliance Industries has a huge aspiration in the sports area. The opportunity to be engaged in integrating the entire sports portfolio and make sports also an integral and important element of the group’s growth will be an exciting journey,” Raman said. The former IPL COO’s exit came after the change of regime at the BCCI with Shashank Manohar taking over as its president. Raman has been under fire over the spot-fixing scandal ever since the Justice Mukul Mudgal report stated that he was ‘in touch with a contact of a bookmaker eight times during the last IPL season’. In fact, the Mudgal Committee had suggested that Raman’s role be further investigated. Raman, who was earlier associated with media agency GroupM, was handpicked by former IPL chairman Lalit Modi to manage the operations of the then fledgling league. He was part of Modi’s launch team that built IPL into a major sports property. Even after Modi’s unceremonious exit when many of his chosen people were shown the door by the Manohar–Srinivasan duo, Raman had managed to cling on to his position. He was the BCCI’s go-to man for driving two of its key properties, IPL and CL T20, the latter having been scrapped recently. Guests cannot see images and links in the messages.
