Tamil channel Captain News editor held on sexual harassment charges
The media is now in the news for the wrong reasons. After Tarun Tejpal’s case created a ‘tehelka’ in the fraternity, Dinesh Kumar, the News Editor of Tamil news channel Captain News has been booked for sexually harassing a former female colleague.
S. Dhineshkumar was arrested from his residence at Vanagaram in Tamil Nadu by the Maduravoyal police following a complaint lodged by a former employee. The police said Dhineshkumar, news editor of Captain News (24×7), works with the channel, which is also the mouthpiece of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK). Founded by actor–politician Vijayakant, Captain Media Network launched the news channel ‘Captain News’ on 29 August 2012. Kumar allegedly harassed a 27-year-old woman when she worked under him as sub editor from 2 October to 11 November 2013. The complainant was relieved of her job in November. She then lodged a police complaint against her former boss. As per reports, an investigating officer said: “The complainant has stated that Dhineshkumar abused her at work and repeatedly insulted her in front of co-workers. The victim claimed that he demoted her by transferring her from the desk to take care of TV news scrolls and later recommended her dismissal stating that she was incompetent.” He was booked under Section 4 (1) of Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, 1998 and was produced before a magistrate, where he was remanded in judicial custody till 3 January. In a statement to the media, a Captain News spokesperson stated that the woman’s complaint was false and Dhineshkumar’s arrest was a ‘political conspiracy’.
