The 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan will be broadcast in 8K
The organizers of the 2019 World Rugby Cup in Japan have announced that the first tournament in Asia will set new standards in terms of broadcasting a rugby competition: there will be a world-wide distribution of the sporting event, attracting new fans through superior transmission quality, which will be in 8K resolution on the Japanese domestic market (via the NHK public broadcaster) and available through down-scaling for 4K resolution redistribution.

It is the first Rugby World Cup to be broadcast by the World Rugby international organization, which teamed with International Games Broadcast Services (IGBS). Thus, the 2019 Rugby World Cup will have the largest audience in history for such a competition, as it will run for over 800 million homes in 217 territories, exceeding the 683 million homes for which the competition was broadcast. in 2015. The World Rugby organization has also confirmed that it will offer streaming to all markets where there are no television agreements, which means that virtually all fans on the planet will have access to the rugby event. In addition, it is estimated that there will be a huge audience in Japan for the opening match between the host country and Russia, a match that could have a record number of viewers in Japan, surpassing the previous audience of 25 million. A total of 34 rooms will cover all angles from the semi-finals and finals, compared to 28 and 23 rooms used for other categories of matches, during the six-week tournament. It will be produced four times more content than in 2015 and a complete experience in social media will be provided. Broadcasting will be offered through multiple feeds in multiple formats, which means that the TVs will be able to broadcast the tournament in UHD / 4K resolution or other lower resolutions. Also, Augmented Reality (AR) will be used in transmissions, and AR elements will be incorporated (for 34 out of 48 matches) for team presentation, player comparisons, as well as statistics and tables. IGBS will also provide a wide range of content, including informational charts for social platforms (@rugbyworldcup). Hawk-Eye technology will be used in official, medical and some fan areas. Also, the World Rugby organization will attract fans to the official tournament through a dedicated application.
