Sohail 1 launch today; to broadcast over 100 channels
From http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/qatar/25062...nnels.html Doha: Qatar’s first satellite Sohail 1 will broadcast more than 30 high definition television (HDTV) and 70 standard definition television (SDTV) channels sometime after its launch. Qatar TV, Al Jazeera channel, Al Rayyan TV and Al Kass sports channel will be among the channels which will be broadcast on the satellite. The satellite will be launched tomorrow from European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, between 11.30pm and 12.20pm (Doha Time). Some 47 Qatari delegates will attend the ceremony. The launch is expected to be from 25 to 30 minutes. The Qatar Satellite Company, Es’hailSat, expects to provide services of the new satellite by this December. The satellite will provide broadcasting, telecommunication and government services in London, France, Italy and Spain, apart from the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region. The Chief Executive Officer of Es’hailSat, Ali Ahmed Al Kuwari, said earlier that Es’hailSat began receiving subscription applications long before the launch of Sohail 1. He said priority will be given to local TV channels and telecom service providers. After conducting experiments and technical tests on Sohail 1 for three months, the orbit of the satellite will be 25.5 east, 36,000km up from the earth’s surface. Es’hailSat owns 54.5 percent of the satellite project, while 45.5 percent is owned by its European partner Eutelstat. Es’hailSat also plans to launch Sohail 2 by the end 2016-17, to strengthen Qatar’s role in the satellite market. |
