Cyclone Helen to hit Andhra, Tamil Nadu tonight, high alert sounded
After cyclone Phailin, Andhra Pradesh is gearing up for another cyclone which is expected to make a landfall near Kavali on Thursday night. All coastal districts and low lying areas have been put on high alert.
The administration has alerted the tehsildars of six coastal tehsils including Bapatla and Repelle to take steps to evacuate people from low-lying areas if necessary and advised fishermen not to venture into the sea. "The cyclone is approaching towards the western region of Andhra Pradesh. We have sent the alerts. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea. In next 24 hours the cyclone can strike," Duty officer of cyclone warning centre GSLN Murthy said. The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal would intensify into a cyclonic storm and cross the coast between Chennai and Ongole on Thursday night, the Indian Meteorological Department said on Wednesday. After hitting the coast on Thursday night the deep depression over west-central Bay of Bengal would intensify into a cyclonic storm in the next few hours and to a severe cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours, it said. Moving west northwestwards for some time and then west southwestwards, it would cross south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts between Chennai and Ongole close to Kavali around the night of November 21, the IMD said. IMD further warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with isolated extremely heavy rainfall over coastal Andhra Pradesh from Wednesday onwards. Squally winds with speed of 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph would prevail along and off north Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts, it said, adding sea conditions would be very high along and off Andhra Pradesh coast. http://ibnlive.in.com/news/cyclone-helen...2-128.html |
