India's 'Milestone Man' Sachin Tendulkar in elitist company
Jesse Owens, Pele, Michael Phelps, Roger Federer: these names send a chill down the spine, especially when you see the wealth of their achievements in sports. And India's very own 'Milestone Man' Sachin Tendulkar will always be talked about in the same breath.
Tendulkar will pull the curtains down on his 24-year career when he appears for the last time on the field of cricket in his 200th Test to be played at the Wankhede Stadium this week. As Sachin gets ready to hang up his boots, let's take a look at the company of most celebrated sportsmen he will enjoy. Jesse Owens, owner of the greatest hour in sports history The legendary American track and field athlete set the 1936 Berlin Olympics alight with four gold medals in an hour. The icing on the cake was that all those four gold medal winning efforts were world records. Pele, no 'goal' difficult to achieve for this Brazilian 1220 goals in 18 years, four World Cups, 100 or more goals in three seasons, five goals in a game six times, 30 times he scored four goals in a match and three goals 90 times. Do we need to say more. Michael Phelps, knows how to swim in gold With 22 Olympic gold medals, the American is the most decorated Olympian of all time. He won 8 gold medals in a single edition at the Beijing Games in 2008 to become the only athlete to do so. With six medals (4 gold and 2 silver) at the London Games in 2012, Phelps became the most successful Olympic athlete for three Games in a row. Roger Federer, the 'Grand Slammer' There hasn't been a parallel to the Swiss ace in men's tennis with a total of 17 Grand Slam trophies: 7 wimbledon, 5 US Open, 4 Australian Open and 1 French Open title. Like Tendulkar, he too is on the wane in the twilight of his career, but that doesn't take anything away from what he has achieved. Sachin Tendulkar, the run machine Enough said. All written. Nothing left. Time to enjoy his last outing. Date: Nov 14-18 Venue: Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai Occasion: 200th Test after 24 years in cricket, 34273 international runs and 100 international centuries Read more at: http://ibnlive.in.com/news/cricketnext/i...ef_article |
