On MS Dhoni's request, Zaheer Khan to double up as bowling mentor
Veteran fast bowler Zaheer Khan will perform a dual role on India's tour of South Africa, travelling as a bowling mentor as well as a Test bowler, Indian Express reported on Saturday.
The report said that MS Dhoni had requested the BCCI to allow Zaheer to fly early to help the fast bowlers during the ODI leg of the tour, which precedes the two-Test series. The BCCI agreed and then informed Zaheer about the same. ALSO SEE Ready for the challenge: Zaheer "Zaheer will be flying with the Indian team on December 2. Zaheer told us that he won't be available for the coming two Ranji [Trophy] games. We will love to see him making a good comeback for India," Mumbai Cricket Association's (MCA) joint-secretary Nitin Dalal told The Indian Express. Zaheer is currently leading Mumbai in their round-five Ranji match against Vidarbha and has reportedly informed MCA about his unavailability. Zaheer took 15 wickets in the first four games of the premier domestic competition this season. ALSO SEE Zaheer's presence will help me grow: Umesh Dhoni had famously described Zaheer as the 'Sachin Tendulkar of Indian bowling' and clearly he now wants the veteran to mentor the ODI quartet of Ishant Sharma, Mohammad Shami, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and Mohit Sharma - out of which only Ishant has previously played in South Africa. "Dhoni had requested to allow Zaheer to fly with the Indian team. Players have high praise for him [Zaheer], and with so much experience, his presence will be helpful. At the same time, Zaheer will also adjust to the conditions before the [first] Test match begins," a BCCI official was quoted by the newspaper. The first ODI of the three-match series is scheduled for December 5. |
