Tata Sky unveils daily Rs 8 daily recharge plan
Tata Sky unveils daily Rs 8 daily recharge plan
For the first time in the industry, Tata Sky is offering a daily recharge plan of Rs 8. The aim is to acquire new customers, especially in semi-urban and rural areas. MUMBAI: It's what a Nano is to cars and a sachet is to shampoos. Tea, coffee, packaged foods and even mobile service providers have adopted this marketing strategy of fulfilling aspirations of value-conscious consumers, albeit in small doses. The latest to jump onto the sachet bandwagon is direct-to-home (DTH) operator Tata Sky, a joint venture between Tata Groupand 21st Century Fox. For the first time in the industry, Tata Skyis offering a daily recharge plan of Rs 8 to popularize its service. The aim is to acquire new customers, especially in semi-urban and rural areas, besides increasing revenues. The DTH industry, with six operators and about 65 million subscribers, has been in the red since it opened up in the early 2000s. A sachet scheme could help the industry expand its reach. "Most of India, in cities and villages, earns and spends every day for their food, toiletries or telecom needs. The recharge scheme puts power in the consumers' hands to choose their level of convenience. This should help Tata Sky penetrate and build inroads into hitherto untapped markets, especially the markets that will be covered in the next phase of digitization," said Harit Nagpal, MD & CEO, Tata Sky. Sachets have been used as trial packs by companies for a large section of consumers in the hope that they would eventually move up the value chain. Harish Bijoor, founder of the eponymous marketing consultancy company, calls this marketing strategy "little-drops strategy". In shampoos, sachets account for nearly 70% of the market. "A company can either target one rich consumer and grab his money for a high-end product or service, or get the same amount from 100 smaller consumers. Getting more from one consumer is not as good as getting less from 100 consumers," said Bijoor. Tata Sky's daily recharge plan is to boost mass consumption and adoption of its technology service. A survey by the company highlighted that consumers feel that they pay for TV viewing even on those days they don't watch or were unable to watch TV. The daily recharge plan and other recharge vouchers in multiple amounts, going up to Rs 100, will now allow people to pay only for those days they choose to watch TV. The daily recharge plan will come in handy for subscribers who do not want to pay Rs 220 per month. Karuna Kamble, a home maker, said, "The recharge plan will be really helpful at our second home, which is near Mumbai, as we visit it only on weekends or once a month. Instead of paying for month-long services that are not utilized, this will ensure we get value for our money." http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/busin...858058.cms |
