Implement DAS in Chennai or face consequences, warns TRAI
MUMBAI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) today warned all the stakeholders in Chennai to take immediate action for effective implementation of digital addressable system (DAS) or face the consequences. Noting that analogue signals are still being transmitted in Chennai, TRAI has directed broadcasters to provide the signals of their channels to only those multi-system operators (MSOs) who are registered for providing cable TV services through DAS.
TelevisionPost.com was the first to report on TRAI’s toughening stance in Chennai. The multi-system operators (MSOs) have been directed to take immediate steps to ensure that only digital and encrypted signals are transmitted through their networks. The authority has also directed MSOs to start collecting customer application forms (CAFs) from subscribers and complete details of CAFs including choice of channels entered into the subscriber management system (SMS). TRAI said it would closely monitor the progress of DAS implementation in Chennai and take all possible actions including penal action as per the TRAI Act to ensure compliance with its regulatory framework. TRAI also urged subscribers in Chennai to take cable TV services only from those operators who are providing digital signals as transmitting analogue signal is illegal. It urged subscribers to co-operate and submit CAFs to their respective cable operators, failing which the MSOs will have to switch off signals of cable TV services to those subscribers. Chennai was part of Phase I of DAS along with Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. However, the capital city of Tamil Nadu is yet to make any significant progress with regard to DAS implementation. This is partly owing to a Madras High Court stay initially and largely prompted by the lack of cooperation from the state government which is unhappy with the central government’s failure to provide DAS licence to state-run Arasu Cable TV Corporation.
